What does Exam mode/lock do?
When activated, it:
- Restricts the pen to reading text aloud only
- Disables features such as:
- dictionaries
- translation
- data storage or scanning to file
This ensures the device behaves like a compliant exam reading pen, in line with exam regulations that only allow tools which read text without giving extra help or advantage.
When should you use it?
You should turn on Exam Mode / Exam Lock:
- During exams or assessments where exam rules apply
- When your school or exam board requires a compliant device
- If you’re using a standard reading pen (e.g. Reader 2/3) instead of a dedicated Exam Reader
- Whenever the pen needs to meet JCQ rules and act as a read‑aloud-only tool
Important
- Some exams may still require a dedicated C‑Pen Exam Reader, which is permanently designed to be compliant
- Exam Mode should typically be used when:
- It reflects your normal way of working, and
- Your school/SENCO has approved its use under exam conditions
Key takeaway
Exam Mode / Exam Lock turns your C‑Pen into an exam‑safe device by removing any features that aren’t allowed—so it can be used appropriately in tests while still supporting reading and independence.
