C-Pen Reader 3 and C-Pen Lingo 3: Wi-Fi connection and firewall guide

Information below applies to C-Pen Reader 3 and Lingo 3.

Wi-Fi basics

  • SSID: the Wi-Fi network name. Sometimes it ends with "_2.4G" or "_5G" to indicate the frequency band, but it remains just a name.

  • Frequency band: the Wi-Fi signal frequency. Common bands are 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; 6 GHz is becoming more common. Some SSIDs reveal the band; others do not.

  • Authentication: the login process for Wi-Fi. Most public networks require only a password (no username) using WPA2-Personal. Other methods like WPA2-Enterprise exist. Read more here:

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), and Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) are the three security certification programs developed after 2000 by the Wi-Fi Alliance to secure wireless computer networks. The Alliance defined these in response to serious weaknesses researchers had found in the previous system, Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).[1]
  • Captive Portal: when connecting to an open Wi-Fi, users get redirected to a webpage requiring both username and password. This is common in hotels

Problems that may arise

Wi-Fi router is set to only use 5GHz band.

Most Wi-Fi networks support 2.4 GHz. If your network disables it, consult your IT admin.

Wi-Fi network uses Captive Portal to login.

If authentication other than WPA2-Personal or Captive Portal is used, the network admin can whitelist Reader 3 or Lingo 3 MAC addresses to allow connection. Success depends on network security settings and must be tested case-by-case.

Find Reader 3 and Lingo 3 MAC addresses in Settings\System information.
